A Glimpse into History: Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano formed thousands of years ago by volcanic activity. Its eastern side was blown away by a powerful eruption roughly 8,000 years ago, leaving behind a stunning horseshoe-shaped crater. The last minor eruption occurred in 1910, but today the mountain remains safe and stable for climbers.
The name “Meru” is believed to have originated from local Meru and Wameru tribes, who have long considered the mountain sacred. Its forests and slopes provide rich cultural and ecological significance, home to countless species and local legends.

Climbing Duration & Itinerary
Most treks up Mount Meru take 3 to 4 days, depending on pace and acclimatization.
Typical 4-Day Climb Itinerary
Day 1: Momella Gate (1,500m) → Miriakamba Hut (2,500m)
Trek through lush forest filled with wildlife. You may encounter giraffes and buffalo on the trail. Overnight at Miriakamba Hut.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut → Saddle Hut (3,570m)
Steeper ascent through montane forest and moorland. Optional hike to Little Meru (3,820m) in the afternoon for acclimatization. Overnight at Saddle Hut.
Day 3: Saddle Hut → Socialist Peak (4,566m) → Miriakamba Hut
Start the summit attempt at midnight. Reach the Socialist Peak at sunrise for stunning views of Kilimanjaro. Descend to Miriakamba Hut for overnight rest.
Day 4: Miriakamba Hut → Momella Gate → Arusha
Descend through the forest and transfer back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.
Accommodation at Mount Meru: Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru uses mountain huts instead of tents, providing added comfort and security. And each hut is equipped with bunk beds, shared. toilets, and a dining area (Miriakamba Hut is at 2,500m and Saddle Hut is at 3,570m)
Climbing Routes: There is one main route to the summit the Momella Route, beginning at the Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park. All climbs are escorted by an armed park ranger to ensure safety due to the presence of wildlife.
Best Time to Climb: The best time to climb Mount Meru is during the dry seasons:
- June to October (cool and clear conditions)
- December to February (warmer, good visibility of Kilimanjaro)
Climbing is possible year-round, but trails can be slippery during the long rains (March–May).
