Arusha National Park

Established in 1960, Arusha National Park is one of the oldest protected areas in northern Tanzania. Just 35 km from Arusha city, it offers a perfect escape for nature lovers seeking a peaceful and scenic getaway.

Despite its proximity to the city, the park has a sense of wilderness and solitude, with breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife. Its most iconic landmarks are Mount Meru (4,566 m), Tanzania’s second-highest peak, and the impressive Ngurdoto Crater. For adventurers, climbing Mount Meru is an ideal warm-up for conquering nearby Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m), Africa’s tallest mountain.

Covering 542 km², the park features a rich variety of habitats  from open plains and lush montane forests to waterfalls and ancient trees, including the famous Fig Tree Arch. It’s also a paradise for bird enthusiasts, with nearly 450 bird species, including flamingos and other colorful residents.

Visitors often spot buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, elephants, warthogs, and waterbucks near the main roads, while baboons, colobus monkeys, hyenas, and even the elusive leopard roam the deeper forests.

The park’s fascinating volcanic history adds to its charm. The Ngurdoto Crater, formed over three million years ago, and the seven shimmering Momella Lakes each with unique alkaline levels create a stunning landscape and provide a haven for flamingos, hippos, and many waterbirds.
