Kitulo National Park
The Garden of God – Tanzania’s Serengeti of Flowers
Perched high on the Kitulo Plateau between the rugged peaks of the Poroto, Kipengere, and Livingstone Mountains, Kitulo National Park is one of Tanzania’s most unique and breathtaking destinations. Often called “The Garden of God” or “The Serengeti of Flowers,” it is a place where nature blooms in every direction a paradise for botanists, hikers, photographers, and lovers of wild beauty.
Covering about 413 square kilometers, Kitulo is located in the southern highlands of Tanzania, between Mbeya and Njombe regions. The park sits at an altitude of over 2,600 meters, offering crisp mountain air, open grasslands, and spectacular wildflower meadows that burst into color during the rainy season.
Nature and Wildlife: Kitulo is globally recognized for its extraordinary botanical diversity. It hosts more than 350 species of vascular plants, including orchids, lilies, daisies, aloes, geraniums, and several species found nowhere else on Earth. During the blooming season (December to April), the plateau transforms into a carpet of vibrant color, a breathtaking sight that attracts scientists, photographers, and flower enthusiasts from around the world.
While the park is mainly celebrated for its flowers, it also shelters various birds, butterflies, and rare primates. It is one of the few places where you can spot the Kipunji monkey, a species discovered in Tanzania in recent decades. Other wildlife includes mountain reedbuck, eland, zebras, and a variety of small mammals.
