Gombe Stream National Park
The Home of the Wild Chimpanzees
Nestled along the steep slopes of Lake Tanganyika’s eastern shore, Gombe Stream National Park is Tanzania’s smallest national park yet one of its most famous. Covering just 52 square kilometers, this lush, emerald paradise is world-renowned as the site where Dr. Jane Goodall began her groundbreaking chimpanzee research in 1960. Her work at Gombe transformed the world’s understanding of primates and made the park an international symbol of wildlife conservation.
Wildlife and Landscape: Gombe’s landscape is breathtaking a mix of steep forested valleys, tropical woodlands, and grasslands, bordered by the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika, the world’s second deepest lake.
The park’s main attraction is its wild chimpanzee population, living freely in their natural habitat. Guided treks give visitors the rare opportunity to observe these intelligent primates up close grooming, playing, and interacting in ways remarkably similar to humans.
Beyond chimpanzees, Gombe is home to olive baboons, red-tailed and vervet monkeys, bush pigs, and small antelope. Bird enthusiasts will find over 200 bird species, including palm-nut vultures, fish eagles, trumpeter hornbills, and a variety of colorful forest birds. The shoreline also hosts hippos and otters, while snorkeling reveals the vibrant cichlid fish of Lake Tanganyika.

Best Time to Visit
Gombe can be visited year-round, but the best time for chimpanzee tracking is during the dry season (May to October) when the trails are drier, and chimpanzees are easier to find as they stay closer to the lower slopes.
The wet season (November to April) is lush and beautiful with vibrant greenery and excellent birdwatching opportunities, though trekking can be more challenging due to slippery paths.
